Numbers Ch.5
Numbers 5 discusses how to right a wrong that may have been done to a fellow Israelite.
The chapter is broken down into three sections: purity, restitution for wrongs, and the testing the unfaithful wife.
It was interesting to discover that the section on the unfaithful wife was the longest - 21 verses, in fact. This was troubling. Why are they putting so much focus on the woman? Why doesn't this chapter mention a process for when a wife suspects the husband of infidelity?
And by the way, why were people required to stay away from camp if they had a skin disease, discharge, or had been near a dead body? From a modern scientific standpoint, separating those who might carry disease makes sense—it prevents the spread of infection. But it’s still heartbreaking to imagine how isolated those individuals must have felt.
Until I remembered that much of our disease comes from the way that we live. If we had lived, eaten, drink and cared for our bodies/temples - since the beginning of creation -the way God designed us to care for them, dis - ease would not be as common. The more we indulge and expose ourselves to ideals and materials outside of God's nature, the more we find ourselves dealing with mental and physical illness.
If humanity had a perfect relationship with God, the way Jesus modeled, prayer and obedience could have healed any mishaps.
As far as the unfaithful wife, we see that God gave Israel extremely detailed instructions on how to keep themselves holy -how to celebrate His festivals, how the priests were to ceremonial clean and dress themselves, what dimensions to build the tabernacle, how to choose and sacrifice the animals. There are at least 20 step-by-step chapters on how the Israelites could remain pure so that His presence could dwell among them.
So how does this connect to the judgement of the unfaithful wives?
These men had to work to live a nearly perfect life- a righteous life. They have been assigned by God to be the head of their household. They are held accountable for anything that happens in their household. This could be seen first in Genesis 3 after Adam and Eve ate sinned. God did not call out to Eve when He could not find them, he called for Adam. He questioned Adam first.
Every tribe in Israel had a specific task in which they were responsible. If these tasks were not done, there were consequences. In some cases, the consequence was death. In Leviticus 20 we read that if anyone worshipped another god and the family did not stop them, they would be cut off from the rest of the Israelites. If you cursed your father or mother you would be put to death. If you were caught in an adulterous affair, both the male and the female would die (v.5)
This means that whenever a woman was judged, it was within a community that was supposed to be virtuous and accountable. Ideally, if she was found guilty, the man involved would also face the same consequence.
Can you imagine if we all chose to live in a virtuous society where everyone worked hard to keep God's decrees. A place where God was in every part of our society - our families, music, all churches, judicial system, businesses, schools, etc? There would be no time to judge others or wander from His path - we would be working so hard to please our Creator, who loves us promises us a life so fullfilling that it would be hard for us to imagine.
But since God gifted us with choice, we find it difficult to stay in sync with God's desired life for us. So read His word, keep asking Him questions and fight to stay on the right path.
He is sees us ladies. He is with us.
