Mustard on Ice Cream

Updated: Apr 4

ree

Can you imagine the taste of mustard on ice cream?

Yuck.

In children's church one of our pastors, Will, was speaking on the good and the bad things that we allow to enter in our lives and how they influence us. He made two bowls of ice cream. In one bowl, he smothered the ice cream in all the good stuff: candies, sprinkles and fudge. He made the second bowl the exact same way except he added toothpaste, ketchup and mustard.

Then he blind folded the kids and asked them to taste-test a spoonful from one of the bowls. It was a fantastic way to make his point: Fill yourself with God's goodness through reading the Bible, prayer and praise--all things that will fill you with some good ole peace!

But today, I want to concentrate on the mustard.

That mustard probably tastes awful with the ice cream but is mustard itself a bad thing?

Nope.

If used correctly, mustard can be delicious! If Will would have presented a hamburger, that mustard would have been delightful on the hamburger's bun. Mustard also tastes great with hot dogs. And some people even like to eat it with fried fish!

Like the misunderstood mustard we all have a purpose. Just because we don't fit in one setting doesn't mean that God can't use us. Even though our ways are aggravating and annoying In certain settings, our gifts can come across as superpowers somewhere else!

Our differences are a gift from God. Learning and appreciating the unique gifts that God has given us has to feel the same way that we feel as parents when a loved one appreciates a gift that we carefully chose for them.

Pray and ask God how to use our own personal 'mustard'.

Discussion Summary and Comments

  • We discussed Paul's response to a complaint that Paul came across strong within his letters but meek in person. Paul basically said he did not have to prove himself to anyone but God.

  • It can be easy to be influenced by those around us without realizing it.

  • Appreciate your mentors but know that your journey is unique. Pray constantly and don't get side-tracked by other's agendas.

  • Examples of how we may try to control the destinies of those we love without realizing it.
