Questons for Numbers Chapter 13 - 12/2/2025
Why is Moses surveying other people's land?
Do you think the scouts' concern was unreasonable?
Recap from 11/25/2025
Numbers Chapter 12
4 At once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.”
Can you imagine God saying that to you—calling you out like a parent breaking up an argument between children?
I definitely would not want to be on the receiving end of that command.
In the middle of their heated criticism, God summoned the three siblings outside of the tent to set the record straight. Not only did He call them out—He positioned Himself in the doorway of the 'tent of meeting', the very place where He dwelled among the Israelites. It’s as if He was saying, “You don’t come back in here until we address this.”
Miriam and Aaron challenging Moses’ authority in God’s own dwelling place was shockingly bold. God constantly communicated directly with Moses. If God had an issue with Moses, He would have addressed it Himself—just like He addressed Miriam and Aaron with some very strong words.
God essentially says:“Do you not understand how much I value Moses? I speak to prophets through dreams and visions—but Moses sees my form. And you dare to challenge him?”
Then God departed—but not before striking Miriam with leprosy.
Honestly, I think they got off easy. Verse 9 says, “the anger of the Lord burned against them.” And we know what that anger can do:
The Flood
The Red Sea drowning of the Egyptian army
The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
Whew! That kind of anger is nothing to take lightly.
And yet, we see why God was angry. Verse 3 describes Moses as the most humble man on earth. His humility shows again in verse 13, where he cries out to God to heal Miriam—even though her punishment came because she challenged him.
Admit it: some of us might have felt a little satisfaction at her consequence. But Moses was distressed that anyone would suffer because of him. That heart posture is exactly why God cherished him—and why God defended him so fiercely.
This doesn’t mean God shields His people from hardship. Moses, God’s chosen and deeply valued servant, still had to lead a grumbling nation through uncomfortable wilderness conditions. But Moses carried that responsibility with remarkable humility—and that humility made him even more valuable to God.
We’ve all been in situations where we thought a leader could do better or made the wrong call. But this passage reminds us to be careful in how we respond. Don’t let insecurity, jealousy, or the desire for influence put us in a position where God must humble us Himself cause I dont think we would like it.
