Judas vs simon Peter

ree

2 disciples of Jesus.

Both were told beforehand by Jesus that they would betray Him.

Both told Jesus that they would never betray Him.

And yet, both betrayed Jesus in their own way.

I believe that their response to realizing their mistake shows how well each man knew Jesus.

Judas was so upset with himself, that he returned the money he took for selling Him out, then took his own life.

In contrast, Peter wept bitterly after he realized that he had denied Jesus three times.

Surely Jesus could predict the shortcomings of all of His disciples, and yet He still loved them and met them where they were mentally.

Disciples that truly understood this about Jesus would have realized that even though they made terrible mistakes, Jesus would have forgiven them if approached the right way and would have encouraged them to take that terrible lesson they learned and use it to bring others closer to Him.

Sometimes we react in our emotions. We decide that we are unworthy and we crawl into a hole of misery in order to punish ourselves. We don't think we are worthy of God's love and we don't want to face Him - even though He is already aware of what we did, why we did it and exactly where we are!

We have to learn to get out of our own heads and see ourselves from Jesus' point of view. And if that isn't enough to pull us out of our own heads and we still feel we deserve punishment, then we should at least have the humility to face Jesus and allow Him to decide our 'punishment'.

Imagine if Judas had lived and repented. He may have faced some backlash from others but the Jesus we know would have risen from the dead, forgave and celebrated with Judas the same way He would later celebrate with Peter and the other disciples.

Then, as He had done with so many others, He would have sent Judas out to share his story of how Jesus had forgiven even him!

What a powerful message that would have been.

I watched a Youtube short where a pastor took a 20 dollar bill and started stomping on it. He stomped on it with his foot from one side of the pulpit to the other. He crumpled it up, then took it to another spot on the pulpit and stomped on it some more. Then he turned to a lady that he had been standing nearby and asked, 'Do you still want it?'

She laughed and said, 'Yes!'

Then he explained that she still wanted it no matter the condition because the bill still held its value.

He then explained that that is how Jesus sees us. No matter how rough our life gets or how terrible the decisions we make, we are still of value to Him.

Judas, had he lived, would have still been of incredible value to Jesus.

Discussion notes and Comments

Another great in depth discussion but I think the following sums up what we discussed.

Peter Simon had a heart of repentance, while Judas did not.

Does God forgive suicide? Responses:

  • That is a great question that we don't know the answer to.

  • It is not for us to judge.

  • Surely He does especially if that person had a chance to repent before fully dying.
