Jezebel

An example of a woman who cursed herself and her people.
Jezebel's influence was so effective that she had one of God's most dedicated prophets, Elijah, on the run and ready to die.
Elijah had just witnessed several incredible miracles.
He witnessed God burning a bull drenched in a small pond of water during a drought in a fire so hot that it burned up the stones, soil, wood, bull and evaporated all the water. 1 Kings 18:30-36
Almost immediately after this fire, after he prayed, he also witnessed God bring a heavy rainstorm to a drought ridden area which had not seen a good rain in at least three years. 1 Kings 18:1
In 1 Kings 18:46 he was given 'the power of the Lord' to run the 17 miles from Mount Carmel (where he witnessed God lighting the altar to Jezreel) ahead of God's miraculous rainstorm AND faster than the king who was traveling by horse and chariot.
And lastly, in 1 Kings 19:5-7 an angel of the Lord appeared to encourage Elijah to eat after a long tiring journey.
And yet after witnessing all of this, when Jezebel sent Elijah the message that she was going to come after him to to kill him, he ran and hid out of fear.
Imagine how effective the Jezebel spirit is in invoking fear if she can get under the skin of Elijah. She felt confident, surrounded by prophets who were probably doing the unimaginable, four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal who ritulistically burned children as an offering (Jeremiah 29:4-5) and four hundred prophets of Asherah, a fertility goddess.
If she can evoke this kind of fear in Elijiah then Imagine the havoc that the Jezebel spirit could create on the mind the average person whose only prayer life is to occassionally go to church.
On a side note, I have to admit that I always thought that Asherah was a type of tree. I didn't realize it was in relation to a god.
And granted, we discover later that there is a good chance that Elijah's fear is validated. After God asked Elijah to go and stand on the mountain and wait on Him, a wind showed up that was so powerful it 'tore the mountains apart and shattered rocks', then an earthquake shook the land, then a fire showed up.
1 Kings 19 explains that God was not in any of that action. So who was? Was it Baal and Asherah trying to show their anger and disapproval of Elijah destroying their 850 worshippers? The very worshippers whose prayers and sacrifices gave them power? If so, it was pretty impressive display of anger.
But notice that if these gods were going after Elijah, they did not touch him. They only caused him a lot of discomfort because they knew that God was on His way! Hallelujah!
God arrived, patiently listened to Elijah's concerns and then calmly gave Elijah his next orders. As if to say, I heard you, you know I got you, you've rested, now there is more work to do, Wow!
But though his concerns were valid, from the outside looking in, we can see that God had already used Elijah to take care of the bulk of the problem. He had used Elijah to get rid of the power behind Jezebel's deity, her prophets. God had already made it infinitely more safe for His people. But because Elijah was in fear, it may have been difficult for him to see it that way.

Discussion Summary and Comments
No one is perfect. We can all carry some of the traits of the Jezebel spirit.
There are some people who seem to never change. Even when it feels like there has been a breakthrough to their character, they continue to repeat terrible habits
My small group had not started to meet even though we were supposed to start meeting two weeks ago. They were waiting for another member to get back in town. I was feeling some kind of way about this because when I was unable to attend a meeting, they had the meeting without me. Why are they waiting for this other person? I realized that I was not reacting the way I was supposed to react so I asked God for help. Then I called the groupl leader and questioned her. She reminded me that I had been a part of the meeting even though I was not there. She cleared everything up for me and I thank God for His faithfulness.
I had a dream that felt real. I was going through a stressful time and I dreamed that people were coming to me, accusing me of stealing and lying and other outrageous things. I woke up and realized that it was an accusing spirit that was going to try to make these things come true if I did not ask God to intervene. I prayed for God to deliver me from this fate and rebuked the accusatory spirit.
I have a parent that treats me the way Jezebel is described. I feel that they cannot help the way that they act because of how they have been treated in the past.
Jezebels are usually created out of abuse that has been done to them. Breaking that cycle is hard.
